As at February 2016 the Australian Bureau of Statistics recorded that there were 152,840 people working in the Construction Industry, that includes Managers, tradies and administration. A new Certificate II in Construction Business is an entry level certificate available to secondary school students interested in a pathway leading to construction business operations such as estimating, scheduling, residential design and site management.

St Norbert College has two students currently completing this certificate one day per week through North Metro TAFE and to ensure these students are industry ready the certificate includes a work placement component.

“This pathway is a fantastic opportunity to engage young people in a construction career who may not be interested in the traditional trades pathway,” Mr Clem Mulcahy, Acting Principal at St Norbert College said.

Year 12 student, Sean Maggs, is completing his work placement with Broad Construction Services. He has been working on the King Square Precinct and the Old Treasury Building Projects and has had the opportunity to assist in a range of activities including the implementation of Health and Safety initiatives, monitoring and recording of works, and quality inspections.

“I liked learning the different construction terms used and I have done some actual measuring and worked on drawings related to quantity surveying,” Sean said.

“I really liked being placed in a wide range of areas that broadened my knowledge of project management,” he added.

“It is a worthwhile exercise introducing students to typical construction environments. It is the best way for them to experience everyday life in the field and gives them the opportunity to make an informed decision if this is a career path they shall choose to pursue,” Mr Stuart Burns, Broad Construction’s Project Manager said.

Year 11 student, Dylan Reilly, is completing his work placement with Da Vanti Homes in Canning Vale. He has enjoyed exposure to how a residential construction business operates. Dylan has worked with the architect, scheduler and also attended site visits.

“Dylan has been really helpful and he can now understand the variety of construction techniques and project needs,” Frank Franco, Project Manager at Da Vanti said.

Congratulations to Broad Construction Services and Da Vanti Homes for leading the way in supporting young people who are starting out in the industry.
