St Norbert teams up with Mater Dei for cultural tour of Japan

Twenty students from St Norbert College and Mater Dei College will spend Easter in Japan as part of a 14-day cultural and language tour this month.

The group will depart for Japan on April 13, and will spend the majority of the first week of the tour visiting sites of cultural importance, including Asakusa’s Sensoji Temple, Hiroshima’s Peace Park and Miyajima Island, one of the 10 wonders of Japan.

During the tour’s second week, the students will attend classes at Seijo Gakuen High School in Tokyo, while residing with local families. The students will travel via the Japanese transport system, commuting on Japan’s high speed bullet trains.

St Norbert College’s Head of Tongerlo House Bronson Gherardi, who will accompany the students on the tour, said it would be a valuable learning experience for the group.

“They will have the chance to see Japan first-hand, and will learn to appreciate the culture more fully,” he said. “They will also have many opportunities to speak Japanese and will be immersed in the local environment.”

St Norbert College has a long association with Seijo Gakuen High School, with students from the Japanese school attending St Norbert College as part of the school’s exchange program each year.

There are more than 150 students studying Japanese in Years 8 to 12 at St Norbert College in 2017.
