Students showcase 'mind-blowing' musical talents during SongMakers program

Students from St Norbert College learnt the art of song writing and production this week, with a little help from some of the Australian music industry’s biggest names.

Eskimo Joe’s Kav Temperley and Melbourne-based producer Anna Laverty collaborated with 16 Years 10, 11 and 12 students as part of the May 15-16 SongMakers program, passing on their expert knowledge to help the students write and record four songs from scratch.

SongMakers is a national mentoring program run by the Australasian Performing Rights Association and the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society (APRA AMCOS). Each year, 50 schools around the country are selected to participate in the program.

Year 11 student Samuel Eaton said he was initially daunted by the prospect of writing and recording a song in the space of two days, but was thrilled to be able to meet the tough deadline.

“It was an amazing experience and I learnt a lot about song making, which was really helpful because I’m looking into a music career,” he said.

Mr Temperley said he was greatly impressed by the musical talents of the St Norbert College students, describing their efforts as “mind-blowing”.

“Song writing is one of those things that you can learn to a certain extent, but at the end of the day it comes down to instincts, and there were several kids who had really good musical instincts,” he said.

“Collaboration is the key part of song making… and so this program is really about learning how to work as a group with a creative idea, which is what the students did.”

Asked if he had to give one piece of advice to those wishing to pursue a career in the music industry, Mr Temperley simply said: “Log up your 10,000 hours.”

For such students, therefore, spending 12 hours writing and recording music as part of the SongMakers program is clearly just the beginning of their musical journey.

The songs produced over the two-day program will be uploaded to SoundCloud later this week.
