Courtney wins state-wide Catholic Arts Scholarship

St Norbert College student Courtney McCrostie’s enthusiastic pursuit of music, dance and drama is set to continue after she was announced as the winner of the state-wide St John of God Health Care Performing Arts Scholarship on September 10.

The Year 10 student was presented with her $1,500 prize at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival at the Perth Concert Hall and said the funds would enable her to develop her skills in music, dance and drama.

“It’ll more than likely mean that I can learn an instrument next year, and then I can also study a Certificate II and III in Music,” Courtney said.

“It will also help to keep me in all my dance classes, because it’s quite expensive.”

The 15-year-old currently studies dance, drama and music at St Norbert College, but said she had never been able to take up a musical instrument due to the cost.

But that’s likely to change thanks to the scholarship win, with either the piano or guitar Courtney’s instrument of choice.

Courtney said her love of performing arts began at an early age, and eventually she has her sights set on becoming a performing arts teacher.

“I’ve danced all my life and then as I’ve come to high school it has developed more,” she said.

“I student-teach at dance as well and I help out with the junior drama club at school. I like working with other people and helping other people… but to combine that with performing arts would be really awesome.”

Drama teacher at St Norbert College Kerri Hilton said Courtney’s passion and dedication to the performing arts was exemplary.

“Courtney is a member of the senior drama club but has been coming along to support the junior club every week which is a lovely thing for the juniors to see and have her there,” Ms Hilton said.

“Courtney is always keen to learn new areas of the performing arts, including backstage and lighting. She is keen to look at directing and acting and that makes her a very well-rounded and deserving scholarship winner.”

The scholarship, awarded by St John of God Health Care in partnership with Catholic Arts, was open to Western Australian Catholic school students from Year 6 to Year 12, who have a passion and demonstrated commitment to performing arts, but due to personal circumstances may be restricted in their ongoing participation.
